A lot of human existence has revolved around just trying to make it to the next meal. Thankfully, we’re living in the relatively short but delightful period of human history where we’ve elevated food above mere sustenance. We’ve turned food into both an art and a science, and there is already a lot out there that discusses both of these branches. I am not interested in writing about this.
I strongly believe that food is one of the best mediums through which to foster human connection. I started this blog, because I want to investigate and share the multitude of ways that food is woven into the story of humanity.
For example, food is a conduit for love. Growing up in an Asian immigrant community, “I love you” was often replaced with “Have you eaten yet?”.
Food is a social lubricant. How many dates/catch ups/hangouts/business meetings have you conducted over a dining table? How many of your plans in the coming week involve a food component?
Food is a way to build community. Almost every Sunday, I cook a big meal and host my friends for family dinner. It would be a much less compelling invitation if food were not part of the picture.
Food is a way of experiencing the world at large. One of my favorite ways to learn about a new culture is by trying the local cuisine. The traditional recipes of a foreign country put the diversity of its ecology and the history of its people on full display.
Ultimately, food is a method of storytelling.
I first realized this when watching the show Chef’s Table. Every episode is a cinematic ode to a specific chef’s journey and to their home country. However, the series only focuses on globally-renowned chefs. I want to discover what other stories are out there, waiting to be told.
Luckily for me, I happen to live in one of the most diverse food cities in the world. Through this blog, I hope to use food to tell equally inspiring stories on a local scale. In particular, I want to focus on food and the immigrant experience, the significance it holds in different cultures, and how, no matter which way you slice or dice it, food is one of the best ways to bring humans together.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey!
That's so true! Once I was talking with some foodies travelers and they told me that food is a way to communicate too. Maybe you cannot speak the same language of other people when you travel, but you can try their tasty food, so when you're eating you can make sound like "Mmm" or "Wow", also see reactions that represent that the food was delicious so yes, we can communicate, make friend, go out with your crush haha and more
Amazing first foody post! Eager to see your next ones…..
